Constellations of Experiences: Connecting to the World of Imagination (2019-2020) Contender, Katy Independent School District's Education Foundation Grant The overall intent of this project is to engage and expose all students within our classrooms to the unparalleled universe that reading can provide through readily available books that are culturally-responsive, diverse, engaging, and relevant. The essentials of these texts relate not only to the characters whose stories are told within the pages, but are also applicable to the writers who create them. Exposing students to these multiple perspectives validates their unique experiences, and gives them opportunities to share their voices. What is created the moment that a student experiences this phenomenon is the establishment of an impactful connection of ideas and encounters between student and text that effectively draws them in and leaves them wanting more. Boxes of new books, selected specifically to appeal to our struggling students, arriving monthly in our classrooms will create excitement and encourage student choice in reading.
